Saving water at home

Media release issued 20 September 2011

Colac and district residents are encouraged to visit the 20th annual Colac Garden and Lifestyle Expo on Saturday, September 24 to book a home water audit.

Barwon Water and G&S Complete Plumbing Services will be at the expo from 9am to 3pm to answer questions, offer water saving advice and arrange WaterSecure Home appointments.

The WaterSecure Home program is designed to help customers save water and money by making their homes more water efficient.

Participants are visited by a licensed plumber who conducts an inspection and installs water-saving devices, such as a water-efficient showerheads, tap aerators or flow regulators.

Barwon Water General Manager Customers and Communication Luisa Munoz said the program focused on simple, but effective, ways to cut consumption in the home.

"The plumber can install water-efficient products and fix minor leaks. It is estimated up to 9 per cent of water use can be attributed to undetected leaks, so it is important to have them repaired," Ms Munoz said.

"These simple measures can result in substantial water savings. For example, installing a 3-star showerhead can save up to 70 per cent on less efficient models.

"The inspection and retrofit could result in significant water and cost savings and I encourage residents to sign up for the program."

A WaterSecure Home assessment is valued at $180. However, Barwon Water and Victorian Government subsidies reduce the cost to $30.

Those unable to attend the expo can book an audit by telephoning 1300 739 220 between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday.
