Don't be fooled by flushable

Baby wipes, cleaning wipes and personal hygiene wipes do not break down like toilet paper.

While some products are labelled “flushable”, they are about as flushable as a couch!

Wipes block pipes

Hundreds of sewerage system blockages are caused by flushable wipes every year, costing thousands of dollars to remove. Wipes are found in almost every pipe blockage – often accumulating oil and grease… yuck!

Wipes not only impact our sewerage systems, pumping stations and treatment plants, but can also block your household pipes. A blockage can cause thousands of dollars’ worth of damage.

Remember the 3 Ps

Only the three Ps (pee, poo and toilet paper) should be flushed.

Please dispose of wipes in the bin.

‘Flushability’ standards

Barwon Water, along with other water businesses, is working with the Water Services Association of Australia (WSAA) to develop appropriate “flushability” standards for Australian and international manufactures.

Wipes and the law

In December, 2016, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commissioner (ACCC) took legal action against wipe manufacturers, alleging that they made false or misleading representations in relation to “flushable” wipes they marketed and supplied in Australia.
